We’ll go step from a blank canvas to mastering this feature by using the above example which shows you the before image (original image) and after image (after using Leonardo AI Sketch to Image feature).

By the end of this post, you will have learned everything about turning your sketches into amazing AI art that you can use to start your side hustle.

Introduction

For those who may have yet to try out Leonardo AI, this is hands down the best Art-generation AI I have ever used. You can create art, images, and videos with prompts. One thing that makes it way better than others is its user interface. For example, with Midjourney, the images are generated in Discord servers, which could have a better User interface. With Leonardo AI, you generate the images on their website, which has a very nice user interface and is easy to use and beginner-friendly.

How to Use Leonardo AI Sketch to Image Feature: A Quick Overview

To start using a Leonardo AI Sketch to Image, it’s as easy as following this five-step process.

Step 1: Upload an Image

Upload an image from either your system, Community upload, or from your past Leonardo AI Generations. We will use this image as a starting point and create some sketches in this image to turn these sketches into life-like objects that completely modify and extend the existing image to create a unique artwork.

Step 2: Select the Canvas Mode to Sketch2Img

You are required to choose the sketch to image option under the canvas mode. There are four options under this selection: Text2Img, Inpaint/Outpaint, Img2Img, and Sketch2Img. Choose the Sketch2Img feature.

Step 3: Adjust Parameters

In this step, you will need to adjust various parameters, such as selecting a fine-tuned model, the number of images you want Leonardo AI to generate, and image dimensions, among other options, which I will explain further in the tutorial.

Step 4: Choose the Sketch tool and start making sketches

Choose the sketch tool from the list of the tools available and start making sketches around the image. In the prompt, type what you want to show in the image, and click on generate button. Leonardo AI would then generate AI art based on the sketch and the prompt you gave.

Step 5: Fine-tune and Generate the Final Image

Finally, export/download your newly generated picture by clicking the download button. Your artwork is ready for the world – whether it’s for personal use or publishing to a wider audience.

We will break down each of these steps below, giving you a clear understanding of how you can truly master using Leonardo AI to transform a sketch into an image.

How to Use Canvas Editor

Canvas Editor lets you turn your existing image and refine the image for creating composite artwork using various Canvas Mode and one of the modes is Sketch to Image mode. With this, you can unleash your creative potential and turn your imagination into amazing artwork.

You will see a blank canvas at the beginning. There are a lot of options present and it can be quite overwhelming if you are new. Therefore, I marked and indicated various tools that are present in below screenshot explaining what each option is.

Most of the options in the screenshots are self-explanatory, I will be explaining some of the options which are needed.

Canvas Mode: This is the canvas generation mode. When you select this you’ll be presented with four options, you would have to select the sketch to image option which will be covered in this article and the rest of the options will be covered in the following articles.

Generation Window: The generation window is a box with a purple and blue gradient which you can see with the lock icon. This is where the sketch and the input prompt you provide would be generated into an image. So, it is essential to adjust this generation window accordingly so that only the specific area of the image would be made into a sketch.

Prompt Input: This is where you type in the desired input you want the Leonardo AI to generate the image out of your sketch. The image would be generated in the generation window.

Render Density: Allows you to decrease the size of the generation window which is useful when you want to draw a sketch in a specific portion of the image. Increasing render density will decrease the size of the generation window and the image generated out of your sketch would have a higher resolution than if you had performed in the bigger generation window.

Guidance Scale: Increasing the guidance scale will make the sketch you drew more similar to what you mentioned in the prompt. Giving too low or too high a value would lead to a completely different output and reduce the quality of the image. Use the default value of 7 which even Leonardo AI recommends on their website.

Fixed Seed: This property is present in the advanced settings below the Guidance Scale. This is used to reference a particular image which can be done by copying the Seed of the image and pasting it into the Fixed Seed input. The output generated by Leonardo AI would look similar to the original image by using a Fixed Seed. This is useful for having consistency in the images and is mainly used for making consistent characters that look similar.

Practical Example Using Leonardo AI Sketch to Image

In this practical example we will explore how you can use the sketch to image and various options available in canvas editor, so with this example, I hope you get all the information available in using this feature.

We will follow the five-step process which I had outlined above in the overview.

Step 1: Upload The Image

Start by uploading an image. I have used the Community Generation image for this example.

Step 3: Adjust Parameters

Adjust the parameters on the right-hand side for this I have chosen the model as Leonardo Kino XLl model which is used to create realistic images. You can increase the width and height of the generation window and adjust render density accordingly based on your sketch. I have kept the guidance scale at the default value of 7.

Step 4: Choose the Sketch tool and start making sketches

I have chosen the sketch tool and decreased the generation window and in the prompt I have typed “moustache” and made a sketch around the girl’s face covering the area that is present in the generation window. I also made a scarf around the girl’s neck and then clicked the generate button. You can see in the below image that a moustache and a blue scarf had been added to the girl’s face.

Similarly, I have made a butterfly and a clock in the background. The final output is shown below.

Final output after sketch to image

Also, one more tip I have observed is that when I draw a sketch in the generation window sometimes the output doesn’t come properly so to overcome this I first draw the sketch in the image without the generation window and then drag the generation window to where the sketch was present. The output generated using this technique came out properly, so you can try this tip if you also observe the output generated is not proper using Leonardo AI Sketch to Image.
